Because ABC is Adams County’s clearinghouse for good works regarding quality of life, organizations and individuals throughout the community are encouraged to adopt an Action Area or to make a Quality of Life Investment. Below are just a few organizations who are working with ABC to make Adams County a better place to live and work.


Adopt an Action Area


The Sammy Fund
Action Area(s): Youth participate in activities
Goal: Community Infrastructure Supports Health and Economic Well-being

In August of 2005, the Sammy Fund officially adopted an Action Area to improve the lives of youth throughout our community. The Sammy Fund pledged to donate funds so that area youth with limited opportunities can participate in childrens’ activities.

Friends of the Trails
Action Area(s): Green space/trails
Goal: Community Infrastructure Supports Health and Economic Well-being

Friends of the Trails announced in August of 2005 that they adopted an Action Area to increase the miles of trails throughout the community. Friends of the Trails participate in activities to raise awareness and improve of the Dogwood Trail throughout Quincy.

Healthcare Access Planning Committee
Goal: Access to Health and Social Services

This community committee has been working on access to healthcare issues for the uninsured and underinsured population of Adams County since 1991. During this time a variety of initiatives have been implemented including the Blessing Hospital Community Outreach Clinic, Adams County Health Department Dental Clinic, MedAssist program of Catholic Charities. This committee has membership from a variety of healthcare providers and social service institutions. The committee continues to assess the evolving health care access needs and plan strategically to identify and implement programs to provide increased access to services for the uninsured and underinsured population of Adams County.

All Our Kids: Birth to Five Network (AOK)
Action Area(s): Children living under the federal poverty level
Goal: Residents live in a state of economic well-being

In April of 2006, AOK agreed to work with social service agencies, health care providers and businesses to increase awareness, understanding and sensitivity to the plight of those living in poverty to break the cycle.  All Our Kids: Birth to Five Network is a community-based collaboration that is committed to developing a high-quality, well-coordinated, easily-accessible system of care that will promote positive growth and development for children 0-5 and their families.

United Way of Adams County
Goal: Residents Possess the Skills to Be Successful In School and Work

The United Way's Nurturing Children & Youth Community Impact Team makes funding awards available for programs focused on children and youth in Adams County through its resource investment process.  The United Way will also support the creation of a countywide initiative to engage and energize the whole community in the concern of academic success.

The Quincy Community Garden
Action Area(s): Percent of residents who report eating fruits & vegetables
Goal: Individuals and families lead healthy lifestyles.

The Quincy Community Garden provides space for residents to garden, compost, and grow their own food and flowers. The garden is open to any resident who is interested and committed to caring for their own plot. Residents must reserve a plot by completing and submitting an agreement form.

West Central Child Care Connection
Action Area(s): Affordable licensed daycare
Goal: Community Infrastructure Supports Health and Economic Well-being

WCCCC is funded by the Illinois Department of Human Services to determine eligibility for low income, working parents to the child care assistance program.  Once eligible, the state can assist them in paying for a portion of their child care.

Adams County Substance Abuse Coalition
Action Area(s): At risk behaviors
Goal: Residents Lead Healthy Lifestyles

The Adams County Substance Abuse Coalition will conduct prevention programs both in the school and in the community to reduce the number of youth that use both tobacco and alcohol.

Coalition for a Smoke-Free Adams County
Action Area(s): Smoke-free restaurants/workplaces
Goal: Community Infrastructure Supports Health and Economic Well-being

The Coalition for a Smoke-Free Adams County and the Adams County Substance Abuse Coalition will pursue an ordinance that will eliminate second-hand smoke in restaurants.

University of Illinois Extension 4-H Youth Development Program
Action Area(s): Average number of developmental assets reported by youth; percentage of youth reporting 3+ hours/wk in sports, clubs, other activities; percentage of youth who report volunteering in the last 12 months.
Goal(s): Community infrastructure supports health and economic well-being; Residents are engaged civic participants

The 4-H Youth Development Program will offer experiential learning programs for youth ages 5-18 that center around the Eight Elements of Positive Youth Development: A positive relationship with a caring adult; a welcoming/inclusive environment; a physically and psychologically safe environment; an appropriately structured environment; opportunites to achieve competency/mastery; opportunities for self-determination; opportunities to value and practice service to others; and active particpation in the future
